Engaging the Challenges of Cost, Affordability and Value
Our work with institutions of higher education has focused on addressing issues within, and forging connections among, three key areas for institutional success: strategy, organization, and talent. We have worked with colleges and universities to address such specific needs as strategy development, cost reduction and strategic resource allocation, net revenue enhancement, organization structure design, employee engagement, customer satisfaction, pay equity, organizational effectiveness, productivity improvement, enrollment management and marketing, as well as large-scale strategy implementation and cultural change.
The reason why Presidents, Provosts, Chief Academic Officers, Chief Financial Officers and other senior leaders, often times with the strong advocacy of their Board of Trustees, have sought us out is because we are subject matter experts who adapt and deploy corporate-proven methods, analytical approaches and diagnostic tools from various business disciplines to help address their challenges. This is unlike other firms that almost exclusively serve the higher education sector.
We do not focus exclusively on the analytical aspects of the work nor do we pass the baton and simply wish the institution well as its begins the challenging journey of implementation and change. Rather, we are hyper-sensitive to the unique idiosyncrasies of the academy. We work closely with Presidents, Provosts and their senior leadership teams to help them build shared understanding and alignment, grow consensus, and strengthen the capabilities and tools required to successfully implement decisions that improve the long-term viability and health of their institutions.
Our experience indicates that the successful resolution of most issues faced by colleges and universities today requires the institution and their consultants to confront and solve three problems simultaneously:
- The technical problem of determining the answer
- The cultural problem of persuading people that many historical paradigms are no longer valid
- The political problem of building consensus in an environment where people are fearful of “losing”
Thus it is not surprising that many of our clients have said that “HOW” we worked with them was actually more important than “WHAT” the work itself actually entailed.
