Corning Vice President & CIO Mark Clark shares his thoughts on successful IT transformation with Axiom Consulting Partners’ Don Ruse, with a focus on three key areas that drive business outcomes.
Don Ruse: We hear a lot today about the need for information technology companies to transform. What does that mean? And what are the business outcomes that IT should be trying to transform toward?
Mark Clark: I see three things – certainly efficiency, agility and insight. In the area of efficiency, we have the opportunity to improve the company’s efficiencies through the use of automation, workforce productivity to make the workforce more productive, and to give them access to capabilities and data and tools in a mobile way. So efficiency is certainly important.
In the area of agility, it’s the ability to go at the speed of the cloud. The cloud gives you the opportunity for things that used to take six months –to basically acquire and install and cable and prepare a server – now can be done at the click of a mouse button.
And lastly, the area of insight. This is how you use the data, monetize the data, to create value; the ability for us to use the data to help create new innovations and understand changes in the way things work; the digital twin. So how can you do things in the virtual world? In the area of supply chain, helping us to speed up and make sure that we are optimizing our supply chain. In the area of commercial, finding untapped revenue. In the area of financial, administrative opportunities, just helping people to do their jobs and answer the questions that businesses need to (in order to) make decisions that will give us the competitive advantage we need.
DR: How big of a change does this represent for information technology as a function?
MC: It’s interesting. In some ways it’s not that much of a change. I’ve been in the industry for thirty-plus years. When I started, we were in main frame technologies and using third generation languages. Today, we are using the cloud and open source capabilities. So from an IT perspective, there has been a constant evolution. But what is very much changing is that it has become much more integral in the way that everyday workers operate; the way they do things at home and the way that things happen at work. For those reasons, IT has to adapt, and we have to continue to flex and adjust to those changing technologies and frankly, the impact it is having on the way that businesses are doing their work.
